Have you noticed a lot of animators and voice actors are dying this year?

I don't know if I am the only one noticing, but almost every day there is a new announcement of an animator or voice actor in animation who died recently. Many of them Japanese. Has anyone else noticed? What's going on? How are we losing so many in such a short span of time?

Banafsheh Esmailzadeh

I’ve noticed, it’s quite sad. I do wonder why we’re losing so many of them :/

Sam Rivera

You're right, it's heartbreaking to see so many Japanese animation veterans passing, especially the recent losses of Kōzō Shioya (Majin Buu) and Masako Ikeda (Galaxy Express 999) within just a couple of months but as we mourn these legends, let's also celebrate them!

Thanks Sarah. I'll look up that book.

I checked those pirate video animations this morning and saw this comment where they had been,

So thanks to YouTube! They acted fast.

What’s one animated project that completely changed how you think about storytelling?

There’s always that one film or series that hits differently.

Maybe it made you realize how powerful animation can be emotionally.

Maybe it showed you a style or technique you’d never seen before.

Maybe it pushed the boundaries of what you thought animation could be, visually or narratively.

For me, it...

Seeing folks mention the opening of UP makes me want to go rewatch it tonight. But, I haven't seen enough love for the Spider-Verse movies and how they've pushed the artform forward both visually and story-wise.

Wes Ambrecht Spiderverse definitely deserves high praise. Between that and Mitchells and the Machines, Sony finally broke the Playdough mold that sunk the animation art form....

This is a very in depth and character driven story. I can see it being done in Anime Style along the line of stories like "The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity", "The Dangers in my Heart" and "Your Lie in April".

What are your plans going forward?

Animation is an underrated genre?

I've realized that lots of people and even filmmakers don't take animation seriously and don't see ot as a tool to create emotional, meaningful or suspenseful stories and films. Most people just think that animation is a tool explicitly for dumb, silly cartoons like SpongeBob SquarePants or Looney T...

To continue my series lol… here’s another classic (obvious spoilers for season 1 of Sailor Moon).
