Animation : I guess the moral of this story is… just release it? by Cyrus Sales

I guess the moral of this story is… just release it?

A low-budget animated film about a cow called Niu Lai somehow went from barely making an impact at the box office to becoming a viral sensation in China. Now theaters are adding screenings and because the film didn’t even have an official press kit, some theaters are literally drawing their own posters to promote it.

It got me thinking about how much time creators can spend waiting for the “perfect” version of a project before putting it out into the world.

Sometimes the thing you think is a weakness or even something people might laugh at, is exactly what makes the project stand out.

So for the filmmakers and animators here:

How do you know when it’s time to stop tweaking and just release the thing?

Is “done” actually done… or are we sometimes just scared to let people see it?

There are cows on the farm behind ours, but none like Niu Lai. They just give milk.

As for releasing the thing, I know a certain show which is ready to make its way out into the world. It has been planned and developed and progressed incredibly. I am certainly not scared.
