Transforming Pressure into Creative Freedom | Coaching for Actors…
Over twenty years on stage and in front of the camera has taught me that the fastest way to deaden a performance is to walk into the room with a plan.
When you sit at home calculating exactly how you want to say a line, premeditating a facial expression, or deciding how you should feel, you aren’t acting. You are just managing a safety strategy. It makes your work rigid, predictable, and physically tense.
Having experience on both sides of the audition table I know that directors and casting panels do not want to see you execute a perfect, premeditated plan. They want to see what happens when the plan completely shatters, leaving only your raw, unpredictable human instinct on the line.
In my private online studio, the work is strictly about dismantling that calculation. My framework is heavily rooted in Harold Guskin’s approach. Guskin teaches us that text creates an immediate acting impulse that we must use without mental censorship. Not only the text. Everything around us creates an impulse we can use – a partner’s line delivery, the physical staging, the scenery, props, or a sudden director’s note.
In the exact same way, whether you are working with a spoken script, a musical theatre score, or an operatic score, everything in the environment is fuel for creativity. I use an adapted Guskin approach to help actors, musical theatre artists, and classical singers explode their dramatic performance by weaponising the material itself—all that without ever messing with their vocal or acting technique.
