I’m Aucencio Martinez, a former Olympic Trials middle-distance runner. After missing the Olympic team by one-hundredth of a second, I believed the hardest moment of my life was behind me. A few years later I suffered a stroke and lost the ability to move my arm and walk normally, forcing me to relearn basic movements and rethink who I was beyond being an athlete. Seconds to Heaven is a feature film based on my true story. It follows an athlete whose entire identity is built on performance and time, until a life-altering medical event strips that identity away and he must rebuild himself as a father and a person rather than a competitor. “Waschmaschine” is a heartwarming short film made with Champs Sport Club. It tells the story of a fitness enthusiast who cleverly mixes exercise into his daily life. One evening, while playing FIFA with his roommate, he gets a phone reminder to pick up his laundry. When he reaches the washing machine and sees there are still three minutes left on the cycle, he turns the wait into an opportunity—dropping down to complete 100 push-ups. Stage 32 member Adam Morse directed the feature film LUCID starring Billy Zane. Adam wrote an amazing and inspiring blog exclusively for the Stage 32 community about his experience directing LUCID with only partial peripheral sight. More about Adam: Writer/Director Adam Morse started losing his sight ten years ago at the age of nineteen due to a rare mitochondrial disease called LHON (Lebers Hereditary Optic Neuropathy) that has left him with partial peripheral sight. Adam used screen reader and magnification software to write Lucid, whilst keeping it a secret when pitching the project! Adam publicly revealed that he is legally blind ONE week before the film made its festival premiere in Edinburgh and he is now championing diversity by blazing a trail for differently-abled artists around the world!
