Mission: Impossible (1996) Rescore

Here's a look at the finished cue inside Cubase before it's married to picture. This project was a great exercise in thematic writing, orchestration, and hitting the dramatic beats of the scene while finding a musical identity of its own. Rescoring films is always a reminder that every cue is a balance between supporting the story and giving it a fresh perspective. I'd love to hear your thoughts! Mission: Impossible (1996) Rescore – Final Version

After sharing the behind-the-scenes process yesterday, I've now finished my rescore of this Mission: Impossible (1996) scene. I made several changes to improve the overall flow and dramatic impact. Some of the updates include refining the thematic material, adjusting the orchestration, improving the pacing around key hit points, and polishing the mix to better support the action on screen. One thing this project reinforced is just how challenging it is to rescore a film with such a strong musical identity. Lalo Schifrin's iconic theme is deeply associated with the franchise, so the goal wasn't to recreate or compete with it, but to explore a different musical perspective while still serving the scene. Rescoring continues to be one of my favorite ways to study film music. It pushes me to think about storytelling, timing, emotion, and how music can completely reshape the audience's experience of a scene. I'd love to hear your thoughts. What worked well? Is there anything you would have approached differently? Mission: Impossible is owned by its respective copyright holders. Just wrapped another scoring exercise for this beautifully atmospheric scene. My goal was to enhance the tension and emotion without overpowering the visuals, using orchestration, texture, and dynamics to support the storytelling. video courtesy: Marika Schanz

Behind the scenes - Rescoring Mission Impossible

I spent today working on a new rescore of a scene from Mission: Impossible (1996). The cue isn't quite finished yet, but I thought it would be fun to share a little behind-the-scenes look at the process. One thing that quickly became apparent is just how difficult it is to rescore a film with such an iconic musical identity. Lalo Schifrin's Mission: Impossible theme is one of the most memorable themes ever written for film and television. Creating a completely new musical direction that still feels worthy of the scene—without simply imitating the original or sounding out of place—is a fascinating creative challenge. In this video, I walk through some of the creative decisions involved in scoring to picture, including: • Finding and creating hit points • Building thematic ideas and variations • Orchestration choices • Synchronizing the music with the action and pacing on screen A quick apology in advance: I accidentally left a gate on my microphone while recording the commentary, so the audio cuts in and out a little in places. I'll definitely make sure that doesn't happen next time! I'd love to hear how other composers approach rescoring scenes with such iconic scores. Do you try to move in a completely different direction, or do you embrace elements of the original while still making it your own? Mission: Impossible is owned by its respective copyright holders.
