Overwhelmed
I was challenged to tell the story of a dramatic scene in 2 minutes of music. The scene depicts a man sitting in his car. He has been struggling with mental health, and is now just staring at all of the medications he has been prescribed, feeling overwhelmed by it along with bearing the weight of stigma in his community where mental health is not discussed. Especially among men, as it would be a show of weakness. The piece begins as I imagine it, very quietly as a string quartet begins playing very dryly, and with as little expressiveness as possible as our character takes in his newly medicated regiment. Feelings of anxiety, sadness and desperation creep in where the strings are joined by a simple piano line. The piano provides the "motor" for the piece as the strings swell into the intensity of the emotional peak. You can imagine the overwhelm boiling over uncontrollably before returning to a quieter and less expressive state as the outburst of emotion finally subsides and turns to the numbness of depression.
What do you think? Does this cue meet the brief?
