About Lucy

Lucy Caborn is a screenwriter and novelist from Columbus, Ohio. Three years ago, she left the Midwest and relocated to Southern California after being offered a fellowship to attend Chapman University's MFA in Creative Writing. While pursuing her MFA, she studied under writers such as Richard Bausch, Yoon Choi, Liz Harmer, Mildred Lewis, and Ben Loory.

Lucy has gotten to live in multiple states over the past ten years, and her opportunities to move were most often the result of university funding. She first spent time living outside of Ohio after accepting a scholarship to pursue an undergraduate degree at Sarah Lawrence College in New York. Here, she was awarded the Nancy Lynn Schwartz Prize for Fiction and was taught by writers such as Alan Kingsberg, Nelly Reifler, Rona Mark, and Porochista Khakpour.

After graduating from college, Lucy spent a brief stint living in Philly, where she was invited to be a member of Philadelphia's esteemed community-run writers workshop known as Backyard Writers. She was a member of this for about a year before precarious finances during the pandemic motivated her to move back to Ohio. Her positive experience with Backyard Writers inspired her to create a sister workshop called Firepit Writers, which she established while working at the Columbus-based bookstore and press, Two Dollar Radio Headquarters.

Regardless of what medium, Lucy tends to write stories with dark humor and morally complicated characters. As a screenwriter, Lucy has written multiple scripts of varying genres, and her newly revised draft of an animated comedy series has already placed in multiple screenwriting competitions.

As for fiction, Lucy is currently working to finish a book called Pinky's Dance Hall that tells the story of a cult that forms amongst a group of bartenders who work at a rundown music venue. Although the novel is still the progress, the first chapter of Pinky's Dance Hall recently placed as a semifinalist in Uncharted Magazine's Novel Excerpt Contest.
