New Member / Sci-Fi Author: Looking for connections in the high-concept genre!

Hi Everyone,

I’m thrilled to join the Stage 32 community! I’m a science fiction author from Hungary, and I’m here to represent my high-concept dystopian project, "2084".

About the project: It’s a near-future political thriller where a global AI surveillance system uses humanity’s digital footprints to decide who is "worthy" of survival. Think Blade Runner meets 1984, but with a modern AI-driven twist.

The story is based on my completed novel (available in English), and I have a polished 3-page treatment ready for the screen adaptation. I’ve spent significant time refining the world-building to ensure it resonates with a global audience. I’m currently looking to connect with producers, managers, and fellow writers who are passionate about elevated genre storytelling and international co-productions.

I’d love to hear from you: What are you working on in the sci-fi space right now? Any tips for a European author looking to bridge into the US market?

Looking forward to connecting!

(Feel free to check out my profile for more details on the project!)

2084 sounds interesting! I'm not working on a Sci-Fi project right now, but I like writing Sci-Fi and watching it!

You could make a post in the Authoring & Playwriting Lounge asking for tips on bridging into the US market. www.stage32.com/lounge/playwriting

Arpad Vaczi

Hi Maurice Vaughan, thank you so much for the warm welcome and the helpful links! I'll definitely check out the blog and the Open House event. Great to meet a fellow sci-fi fan here! What is your favorite sci-fi subgenre to write or watch?

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Arpad Vaczi. Great. See you at the Open House. Sci-Fi Horror and Sci-Fi Comedy close behind. What's your favorite?

Arpad Vaczi

Great choices, Maurice! Sci-Fi Horror can be incredibly powerful. As for me, my heart lies with Cyberpunk and Dystopian Sci-Fi. I’ve always been fascinated by the 'High Tech, Low Life' aesthetic and the philosophical questions of near-future technology. That’s actually the core vibe of my project, '2084' as well. See you at the Open House!

Maurice Vaughan

Thanks, Arpad Vaczi. I'd like to write a Cyberpunk story. A Dystopian Sci-Fi story too.

You could post about your novel on your profile. Producers search profiles for projects. That and networking are how I sold four short scripts to a producer. Click the gear symbol in the top right-hand corner and select “Edit profile” in the drop-down menu. Scroll down to “Loglines” and click “Add/edit loglines” to the right of “Loglines.” You can also post about your novel on your profile this way: www.stage32.com/loglines (near the top where it says “Add a Logline”)

And reach out to the Success Team at success@stage32.com. Geoff and his team can help you connect with producers, managers, and more.

Arpad Vaczi

Thanks a lot for the pro tip, Maurice! I didn't know the Logline section was such a powerful tool for discovery. I'm going to add '2084' right now. Also, I’ll definitely reach out to Geoff and the Success Team. Your advice is much appreciated!

Hello, nice to meet you.

Your concept is absolutely intelligent and frightening at the same time. The idea of AI deciding who is worthy of living and who is not is deeply unsettling.

What makes it even more shocking is that scientists and engineers themselves admit they do not fully understand how AI learns. That makes controlling or stopping its growth increasingly difficult, and it leaves us unable to predict how it might treat humanity in the future.

This is exactly why ideas like this matter. They serve as a warning about the possible futures of AI.

Arpad Vaczi

Hello!

Thank you for your insightful comment. You hit the nail on the head regarding the 'black box' problem of AI.

In '2084', I specifically explore the transition from AI being a tool to AI becoming an autonomous architect of social cleansing. The most terrifying part isn't just that it kills, but that it does so based on cold, logical software analysis of our digital past—things we've already forgotten, but the system hasn't.

I believe sci-fi's greatest duty is to act as a mirror to our current trajectory. If we don't understand how the machine thinks today, we won't be able to argue with its verdict tomorrow.

Great to have you in the conversation!

Meriem Bouziani

Yes, I agree with you.

AI rules cannot truly follow human ethics. As you said, it would act according to cold logic and numbers. Even people considered ‘worthy’ of living might not be valued for who they are, but for a specific purpose the AI deems useful. Once that purpose disappears, the same person may no longer be considered worthy to live.

We cannot even define a stable, universal set of ethical rules for such an AI. Everything about how it might behave toward humanity remains speculative, predictive, and, for now, within the realm of science fiction.

(that’s what I write for him in Hungarian): Hi Árpád, I’m Imola, 15 years old, a future film director, screenwriter, and producer from Hungary too. I also would like to make sci-fi/dystopian projects, and that’s why I’ll also would like to work in the US film industry, because there are a more much money for it, but I know that I should make succesful short films here until that, and I should make better my English (it’s on the intermediate level now) xd I also love this two genres in novels, although I’ve been read only them in YA subgenre, my favorites are Legend by Marie Lu, Across the Universe by Beth Revis, and Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff (I want to re-reading the last one, because I don’t read the prequel yet, and I really not remember it). And my favorite movies are Interstellar, and In Time.

I want to write a sci-fi feature screenplay (which I want to make as a film), and I improve my filmmaking skills in a Hungarian filmmaking course for teenagers :) Here’s a movie I directed and edited in there: [link])
