Amanda, old friend… The 4,500 figure is frightening, but the wider question for creatives is what continued consolidation ultimately means for opportunity. Two studios becoming one doesn’t just potentially mean fewer employees. It can mean fewer buyers, fewer development teams, fewer productions and fewer doors for writers, directors, producers and crews to knock on. There may be sound business arguments for consolidation, but we’re already working in an industry where getting original material made is extraordinarily difficult. I hope whatever emerges from this creates more films and television, rather than simply creating a bigger company making fewer of them.
