Ms. Thornburg is a writer, director, playwright, and producer (sometimes actor) whose work has garnered numerous national and international awards. Highlights include her independent feature film adaptation of May Sarton's iconic novel “Mrs. Stevens Hears the Mermaids Singing;" the documentary “Oh Dear: A History of Woman Suffrage in Ohio;"; a groundbreaking lesbian play—a comedy about two women who live in a bed—called “Leap of Faith;" a rare television special with the legendary folksinger Odetta; a local Emmy-Nominated series on Ohio history, produced for CBS by the Ohio Historical Society; and a Pyramid Award for best Cable Short for "Another View: Portrait of Blind Sculptor, Anne Gazelle."
She began her career as the first woman director at WBNS-TV, CBS, Columbus, OH, directing the evening news; wrangling Ohio State’s famously obstinate football coach, Woody Hayes; and producing a morning program, "Schoolies" for elementary school kids. Her current project, "Snorkel McCorkle and the Lost Flipper," brings her full circle. Partnering with singer-songwriter Katherine Archer, Thornburg first wrote "Snorkel McCorkle and the Lost Flipper" as an animated feature. She has now adapted it as a middle grade novel with music.
She is also the author/illustrator of a children’s picture book called “The Cat Doesn’t Travel the Usual Path.” Additionally, Ms. Thornburg has taught courses in film and television production and screenwriting at The Ohio State University, The Evergreen State College and Columbus College of Art and Design.
