A PITCH FOR LOVE
By Michael Zielinski

GENRE: Romance
LOGLINE:

When a film production arrives in a small town the star sets her eyes on a local widower who’s a dead ringer for her late boyfriend, determined to lure him away from his low-simmer widowed girlfriend -- forcing him to choose between fantasy and reality.

SYNOPSIS:

I’m a newspaper columnist and a sucker for romantic comedies. The cross-pollination of both interests gave birth to A Pitch for Love, an intoxicating blend of romance, comedy, intrigue, drama and how three people deal differently with the death of a significant other.

MATT MEREDITH, widowed with a 12-year-old son and a columnist for the Braxton Bugle and a Little League coach, is in a low-simmer relationship with ROBYN BAXTER, an advertising copywriter and the widowed mother of 12 and 10-year-old sons. He wants to stomp on the accelerator with their relationship while she wants to ride the brakes. Their sons are best friends and the two 12-year-olds star on Matt's team.

TIFFANY UNDERHILL, the female lead in Drug Town -- a major Hollywood movie filming on location in Braxton -- is immediately obsessed with Matt because he could be her late boyfriend’s identical twin and aggressively pursues him.

To entice the producers of Drug Town to film in Braxton, the mayor skims a quarter million dollars for the site fee from a capital campaign fund helmed by his girlfriend. He later drunkenly admits this to Tiffany. She is the source for Matt when he investigates the Shelter scandal, which conflicts with Robyn’s advertising campaign and strains their relationship. Compounding their fissure is Tiffany's spot-on assessment of why Robyn is dragging her feet with Matt -- a deep-seated fear of again being widowed.

On the outs with Robyn, Matt succumbs to Tiffany's charms, and they wind up in bed. But at that moment he realizes how deeply he loves Robyn. After confronting Robyn about her subconscious fear of losing another husband, she realizes it's true and asks Matt to marry her.

Tiffany makes one final move on Matt on the eve of his wedding with Robyn and after he rejects her, she fires a baseball at him, giving him a black eye. Friends alert Robyn, who cancels the wedding. Matt and a contrite Tiffany visit Robyn in the middle of the night and the seams of the baseball around Matt's eye convince Robyn that he was not unfaithful, and the wedding is back on.

The emotional arc of the script is that true happiness cannot be achieved while chained to ghosts of the past.
