FINAL BLOW
By Simon Iliopoulos

GENRE: Period Piece
LOGLINE:

When a botched heist ends in murder, it triggers the largest manhunt in Australian history, forcing two larrikin fugitives to fight for their freedom in a system built to break them.

SYNOPSIS:

1950s. Restless, defiant teen KEVIN SIMMONDS grows up in rural New South Wales. No stranger to hardship, he steals from his dad, runs away, and lands at Boys Town, where crime and survival are his education. By 18, the veteran of break-ins learns strength and discipline through martial arts and boxing at Gosford Prison Training School. Kevin prepares for a rebellious life against the rules. On release, he teams up with slick swindler cellmate FRANK FOLEY, 18, and they stage a suburban bank robbery. Kevin fires a warning shot to cement his reputation as a leader and thrill-seeker. But when Frank disappears with the loot, Kevin is left empty-handed. Months later, after a dramatic chase through city streets, police officers catch Kevin, and his sentence is fifteen years in Long Bay Gaol. Inside, he meets LES NEWCOMBE, an aimless young crook who searches for purpose. The two form a tight bond, built on trust and resentment for the system. With guidance from a humble First Nations inmate, they plan an escape. Not for glory, but to reclaim their freedom from an institution designed to squash them.

In October 1959, Kevin and Les stage a daring midday breakout and vanish into the Sydney sprawl. That night, they hide in fresh-dug graves at Botany Cemetery, as police flood the area. In the weeks that follow, the duo drift between showgrounds, derelict buildings and scavenge for food while Authorities remain baffled by the disappearance. When desperation sets in, Kevin and Les steal a car and drive through the night to Emu Plains Prison Farm. Confrontation with a WARDEN turns into a violent, fatal mistake that changes everything. The death brands the duo as killers and ignites the largest manhunt in New South Wales history. Two weeks later, police officers capture Les and throw him in a holding cell to await trial, wearing a straitjacket for his twenty-first birthday. Kevin remains free for five weeks: he slips through police cordons, survives in the bush, and mocks authority with every narrow escape. His defiant charm and rugged looks captivate the nation. Newspapers crown Kevin “the good-looking bandit,” while sympathisers plaster posters across Sydney. An unlikely folk hero, fugitive Kevin drinks the milk women leave for him on their doorsteps. But exhaustion and hunger catch up with him. Kevin surrenders to end the chase.

Sent to Grafton Gaol, he faces a regime of relentless cruelty. Guards beat, torment, and humiliate him as his rebellious spark fades. The outlaw becomes a broken man as he clings to sanity in a place designed to destroy it. After seven brutal years, a warden finds Kevin hung in his cell. Officials call it suicide, but the bruises, silence and fear suggest another truth. Final Blow is a true story of rebellion, brotherhood, and the cost of freedom—an unflinching examination of a system that hunts the outlaw—and often creates him.
