Sav Rodgers is a filmmaker and screenwriter from Kansas City. His work often centers on telling highly specific, surprising comedies and documentaries involving LGBTQ+ characters. He is the director of Chasing Chasing Amy (2022/23), an upcoming feature documentary about the cultural impact of Chasing Amy (1997) on the greater LGBTQ+ community and the profound, lasting impression on his own life. Sav also delivered a TED Talk on the subject titled, “The rom-com that saved my life.”
In 2014, Sav founded Professional Amateur Productions as a film student at the University of Kansas. Since its creation, Sav’s films have been featured at numerous film festivals worldwide, including Academy Award-qualifying events such as Slamdance and the Cleveland International Film Festival. His last short film, Queen for a Day (2019), made its international debut at the American Pavilion Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2019, he received the Filmmaker of the Year Award at the Austin Revolution Film Festival.
As a screenwriter, Sav often writes solo and with his writing partner, Taylor Gates. Their screenplay I Love You Margot Robbie has been named a Finalist at the Outfest Screenwriting Lab, Screencraft Comedy Screenplay Competition, and the Producers Guild of America’s PGA Create program. His other completed scripts include Empty Nesters, Pancake Skank, Telethon: The Quest to Save Grease 2’s Reputation, and Mallwalkers.
In addition to his work as a director/writer, Sav is also the Founder and Executive Director of the Transgender Film Center, a nonprofit aiming to help trans creators bring finished films to audiences around the world. Currently, he also serves on the Board of Directors for Film Society KC and on the Advisory Council for the Vidiots Foundation. Sav has also programmed at numerous film festivals, including Slamdance, Outfest, and the Victoria Texas Independent Film Festival. As a creative, Sav has also previously been a TED Resident, and OutSet Fellow at Outfest, a Charlotte Street Studio Resident, and a Creative Fellow at Artist INC and Artist INC Advance.
