Shortly after graduating from SJU with a degree in Communication Arts, Leo Curbelo became involved in film and television production. After interning in various independent films, he co-produced and starred in segments for Univision’s candid camera program “Lente Loco.” As an early adapter to digital desktop publishing, his side career of Graphic Designer employed him in the largest advertising and marketing agencies on Madison Avenue. These skills helped him move up the ranks in New York’s long standing Latea Theater, from Production Assistant, to Graphics Director, and until recently Co-Secretary on it’s Executive Board.
Leo studied non-linear editing at The Edit Center under award winning editors Alan Oxman (Control Room) and Affonso Gonçalves (Carol.) He went on to edit various programs on broadcast and cable networks including LXTV, MTV, SpikeTV, Discovery, Nickolodeon, Oxygen, ESPN, and NBC. He also co-edited the documentary “Splitting Hairs”, an official selection to Silverdocs among other festivals. Corporate editing assignments for IBM led to on-site work throughout out Asia and Europe. Other major corporate edit work included Cannes Lions award submissions for the Omnicom Group.
As Writer & Director, Leo’s films have played in various national and international festivals. He has also produced micro-budget independent films and web series. As a writer he has completed five feature length screenplays including his latest, a New York City family comedy, currently making the pitch rounds.
