A human skull can not only represent death... but it can single-handedly represent the horror genre. One of the earliest examples that I remember is the infamous Halloween II, whereas we see an image of a skull coming out of a pumpkin.. on both the poster art and during the opening credits... but... that's it. We never see it (a skull) again, not in one frame during the film...
