The film is made entirely of still imagery. There's a legend about a spirit or goblin in Germanic folklore which rides on people's chests while they sleep, bringing on bad dreams. This spirit is known as a Mara. The film Nightmares shows the story of 3 people who are each visited by a Mara in their dreams. The Mara makes them each experience their worst nightmare.
