In 1845 North Carolina, a pristine and guarded young woman, AVELINE CANARD (mid-20s), returns to her rural childhood home following her mother’s death. Years ago, Aveline fled this town to escape brutal bullying, building a flawless, immaculate exterior to shield herself from past trauma. She has returned solely to claim her mother’s ornate hand mirror. Upon arriving, she encounters THOMAS BAKER (late 40s), the schoolmaster who once ignored her childhood torment. When Thomas comments that time has been kind to her, Aveline coldly fires back that it owes her. Thomas warns her that kindness makes a face worth remembering, leaving her with a chilling parting thought: she will eventually wear the face she has earned.

Inside the farmhouse, Aveline claims the mirror. Driven by deep-seated resentment, she hides the mirror's engraved motto about kindness beneath a tightly knotted ribbon. When a gentle local woman, HARRIET SHAW (20s), attempts to comfort her, Aveline's rigid pride rejects the warmth. As Aveline's internal anger and bitter memories begin to boil over, a terrifying supernatural transformation triggers beneath her skin, casting a sickly green hue along her jawline.

Thomas returns to ask for the mirror as a town remembrance token, shattering Aveline’s restraint. She unleashes her lethal, pent-up rage over the cruelty the town inflicted on her as a child. After slamming the door, a furious Aveline glares into the mirror and watches her reflection violently twist into a snarled monster—the physical manifestation of the ugliness her childhood bullies once projected onto her.

Terrified, Aveline bolts into the dark forest road. In a desperate bid to stop the curse, she shatters the mirror and tears the ribbon free. Reaching the county boundary line, she hesitates, then drops the ribbon into the weeds. Looking down into a rainwater puddle, she finally lets go of her burning resentment and stops trying to perform a perfect identity. Her reflection settles, the monster recedes, and a single loose strand of hair falls across her face—left uncorrected and authentic at last as she walks forward into the night.
