Rick’s first instrument was trumpet which he played in the Norfolk Island Boys Brass Band. He took up the saxophone at 17 while studying in New Zealand and toured and recorded with bands such as Ardijah, Midge Marsden, Superbrew and the Kenny Pearson Power Band. The Kenny Pearson Power Band received the New Zealand Jazz Album of the year award during Rick’s period with the band.
A move to Australia in 1990 (to study at the Conservatorium of Music where he gained a Diploma of Jazz Studies) saw Rick joining dig (Directions in Groove) which over a period of ten years recorded 4 albums of original material, winning Apra and Mo Awards and attaining a gold record. dig toured internationally many times playing at prestigious festivals such as Montreax and North Sea Jazz festivals, Big Day Out, Byron Bay Blues Festival and clubs from Berlin to New York.
Rick formed the band Baecastuff in 1996 and collaborated with some of Australia’s finest improvising musicians to produce 3 albums of original material over the next 5 years. Mike Nock signed Baecastuff to the Naxos Jazz label in 2000 and they produced “Out of this World” which was released internationally. Baecastuff toured and performed all around Australia playing at many festivals including Wangaratta, Noumea and Darling Harbour Jazz FestivalsCollaborating with Lex Wilson for his next project EON, Rick signed with Creative Vibes Records and produced 4 albums over the next 8 years. Eon albums were released in Germany and France and tracks found themselves on many compilations including Private Lounge 5 – Apricot Records, France. EMI, Summer Sojourn - Instinctive Travels, Spring Sojourn – Instinctive Travels, The Quiet Hours – Creative Vibes Records, Sydney, The Sex, The City, The Music - Petrol Records, Vibes on a Summers Day 2003 Compilation, Long Grain No.s 1 & 3. Eon Beats currently plays live at festivals, clubs and functions.
Over the past 4 years Rick has been singing jazz and currently sings and plays saxophone with the Rick Robertson Trio and Quartet. Engagements include the Darling Harbour, Bellingen and Norfolk Island Jazz Festivals.
Ian Mussington and Rick wrote and produced OOBA MUSIC in 2010 and the album is due for release sometime this year through the Creative Vibes Label.
