Marla Dean, MA., Ph.D. teaches creative writing at the University of Phoenix, Humanities at the University of Kaplan and Acting as well as Introduction to Theatre at Austin Community College. She recently completed her first novel, SIMPLE MACHINES with her co-writer Manuel Carreon and was one of the winners of Texas Authors 2015 Short Story Competition with her story, “The Dog”. She is a director of some sixty plays and musicals and an awarded playwright. Currently her co-writer and she are completing a three book military thriller series, Mahim. SIMPLE MACHINES takes us deep into the interior of the American Army Ranger and the volatile combat zone of the Special Ops Team during a hundred days of deployment.
This is a war novel with the rush of battle, agony of loss, and courage of the undefeated. It is not for the faint of heart or those who look romantically at war and heroes. The stark reality of life and death choices made during battle depict an anti-hero, damaged and questioning the price he and his men are asked to pay.
