DUST BELOW THE SURFACE

DUST BELOW THE SURFACE
By Alexander Kruglov

GENRE: Thriller / Suspense, Science Fiction
LOGLINE:

In a near-future Africa ravaged by climate change, a geologist and a local man team up to harness a newly discovered underground water source, only to find that their groundbreaking discovery has already attracted the attention of a powerful corporation that played a role in the continent's desertification.

SYNOPSIS:

In a sun-scorched Sahel village, a single drop of water glints in the cracked earth as Baba Sulani, a weathered farmer, uncovers a vast underground aquifer while planting crops. His discovery, a beacon of hope in a climate-ravaged Africa, draws his journalist daughter, Leila, who publishes a front-page story, igniting global attention. Jonas Wenger, a disillusioned geologist, reads her article and recognizes the aquifer’s potential to reverse desertification, a scientific miracle tainted by the shadow of Eldorado Coal Inc., the corporation responsible for the continent’s ecological collapse.

As the trio unites, a drop of water becomes their symbol of resistance. But Eldorado’s CEO, Richard Fands, a cold strategist haunted by a childhood sand hurricane, moves to crush their hope. Armed guards from the PMC Cactus storm the discovery site, and Leila’s article is suppressed by a corrupt government, costing her job. Undeterred, Baba, Leila, and Jonas resolve to take their fight global, planning a trip to Europe for funding. In a tense Vienna airport, corporate-hired guards posing as police interrogate them, revealing Eldorado’s international reach. A local police chief, outraged by the deception, allies with them, offering a glimmer of hope.

Years ago, a sand grain falls in Baba’s memory of a market square devastated by a sand hurricane, claiming his wife, Angel. This trauma fuels his resolve as he returns to his village, rallying a grassroots movement to fund water exploration. Meanwhile, in Vienna, Jonas and Leila face a new threat: Mr. Incognito, InterCoal’s enigmatic mastermind, whose obsession with controlling nature mirrors his algae-laden office. He abducts them, offering a chilling deal: abandon the aquifer, or Baba suffers. As a drop of water falls from Leila’s tearful eyes, Jonas deceives Mr. Incognito, pretending to join him to gather evidence.

In Africa, Baba’s capture by PMC Cactus sparks a massive uprising. Villagers chant “Free Baba, Save Climate!” as donations pour in, amassing millions. A hidden microphone in Baba’s ear, planted before his capture, records InterCoal’s brutality, transmitted to Leila’s former editor, Omawu. The evidence goes viral, forcing Eldorado’s directors to resign and prompting the UN to launch an international tribunal. In a dream, Baba sees Angel in a lush, irrigated Sahel, her words—“You are a hero”—guiding him to peace.

In a final confrontation at Mr. Incognito’s mansion, Jonas’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills and Leila’s defiant speech turn the guards against their master. As police sirens wail, a drop of water on the floor reflects their victory. In The Hague, Leila’s testimony secures Mr. Incognito’s lifetime imprisonment, and the trio is nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Years later, a revitalized Africa blooms with irrigation canals, where Baba plays with his grandchildren, and Jonas and Leila, now Minister of Climate, continue their work. A final montage shows water flowing through once-barren lands, a testament to their fight. On “Founder’s Lounge,” Baba reflects, “The seeds of change are sown in silence, but their harvest echoes forever,” as a single drop of water falls, sealing their legacy
