About Erika

I’m not exactly sure where I found my voice and passion for writing and producing films. Maybe it was bubbling under the service while I was serving in the U.S. Army or during one of my 34 moves to 8 different states. I may never know when it started but I have certainly walked several miles in a lot of shoes, and I use that energy and insight to create works of art.
Since 2008 I have been honing my craft as a visual storyteller but have just recently earned my degree in the field of Cinema. I have produced several short films, a miniseries focusing on Black history, and many other forms of content. With my many years of experience and training, coupled with my academic exposure, I believe that I am perfectly suited for our current creative climate.
I have worked as a writer, a casting director, producer, director, and editor. I have made investments in my writing skills and am a capable and enticing writer. Each film project requires a different crew, and I have built each one based on the specific needs and budget for the project.
My work is Black woman centric for which I will not apologize. Black women, among all the man-made sociological divisions of humans, have been for too long boxed into intently small expectations. Black women in my work are both the antagonist and the protagonist, often in the same film. They are decisive and powerful, diabolical and full of compassion. They represent both the grace and demise of civilizations.
As for a genre, I often look to blend genres to imitate real life. All dramas inherently have moments of outrageous laughter that are enter twined in the narrative while well written comedies can be as thought provoking as dramas. I don’t believe that this philosophy is one that I am willing to die on, but it is a premise I am always considering. My favorite ones to blend are comedy, drama, and thrillers.
My goal is to never have to live too far from my home in Virginia in order to find success. If my travels have taught me anything it is that talent doesn’t always live and die in a particular zip code. So, I invite you to keep a weathered eye out on the east coast and see the stories E5Productions and Margo Burger Media are set to create for the world.
