For years Dr. Nava, a romantic has clung to hope, searching for his missing wife in an arctic apocalypse swarming with ice zombies and bandits. With the only cure dangling in a vial around his neck, Nava is willing to risk the fate of humanity if it will bring him to his wife.
SYNOPSIS:
In this dystopian future most of the planet is covered in subzero temperatures due to “the frost." What is left of humanity lives in a thin strip of warmth and safety near the equator. Frozen zombies (popsicles) and human bandits roam the dangerous “zero-zone.”
Dr. Noé Nava, a disgruntled warrior, must pursue Ana, a thief who has stolen a serum to cure the infected “popsicles.” Ana is taking the serum to and research to El Teniente, the leader of the bandits. Dr. Nava, however, is more worried about his wife María stationed at outpost 31 instead of the serum.
Nava retrieves the serum, but Ana has escaped with the research. Nava chooses to check on his wife rather than continue after Ana. However, enroute Nava encounters a family affected by his choice. Matilda the daughter, her papa, and mother who is pregnant and in labor are on the run after Ana attacked their outpost. Nava delivers the baby, but it is born a popsicle. Nava tests a drop of his serum on the baby, and it works. However, the mother turns to a popsicle and eats the baby. Nava, Matilda, and Papa escape the and reach outpost 31 only to find it abandoned except for one harmless child-like man, Chivo.
The group plans an attack on El Teniente and his den of bandits. El Teniente has created his own serum that allows humans to become popsicles but maintain their consciousness. He invites Nava to join him and Nava’s wife, popsicle María whom El Teniente claims helped create his serum and willingly became a popsicle hybrid. El Teniente proposes Nava and María become the Adam and Eve of this new frost covered world. Nava refuses the monstrous idea, but when El Teniente decides to execute him, popsicle María uses her popsicle abilities to call other popsicles. A chaotic battle ensures between popsicles, Nava and his team, and the bandits. The camp is destroyed and after the smoke has cleared María is gone.
Nava is crushed, he’s not sure he even believes that was María and decides to keep looking for her. Matilde and the survivors plead with him to return home, but Nava chooses to wander the zero zone with nothing but hope that he’ll find his wife.
Nava is never seen again, only heard of through stories. Years later an elder Matilde finds Nava’s vehicle parked outside an old movie theater. Now an expert tracker Matilde pieces together Nava’s fate. Dr. Nava found his popsicle wife in an old movie theater. He forced the serum into her, but she rejected it. The theater burned and Dr. Nava died.
An elder Matilde finds the body. She’s angry with Nava for wasting his life, for not sharing his knowledge with the world, but takes what is left of the serum to research and produce more. Nava’s addiction to his romantic notion of reuniting with his wife prevented him from living a life and enriching the lives of others. This is Matilde’s message to her audience. To put your hope, aka your love into those who can return it.
