In 1962 Berlin, at the height of the Cold War, a CIA operative teams up with his former lover, a Soviet spy, to stop a rogue Russian general's deadly operation while exposing corruption within their own ranks, leading to a dangerous pursuit across Europe that culminates in a final showdown in Lisbon.
SYNOPSIS:
Act 1: East and West Berlin
In the tense atmosphere of East Berlin during the Cold War in 1962, CIA operative Paul Richter covertly meets a young East German informant named Peter. The informant is nervous, hoping to escape to the West through a CIA-planned tunnel. However, as Peter leaves the meeting place, he is fatally shot in the street. Richter barely catches a glimpse of a mysterious black-haired woman in a fleeing car, whom he suspects to be Elena Volkova, a former Soviet spy and his past lover, believed to be dead.
Richter reports to the Berlin Operating Base (BOB) in West Berlin and informs Station Chief David Mosebey of the incident. Skeptical of Elena’s involvement, Mosebey assigns Richter to uncover the identity of this woman and her connection to the murder. An informant named Klaus gives Richter an address in East Berlin linked to Elena. Richter's investigation leads him to a safe house where he discovers the body of a supposedly loyal Soviet colonel, Anatoly Perechenko, who was working for the CIA.
Realizing the presence of a deeper intrigue, Richter confronts possible betrayal and espionage from within the CIA and other intelligence agencies by Mosebey and needs to tread carefully as he navigates the layers of deceit presented by both sides as he begins his hunt for Elena.
Act 2: Paris
Richter tracks Elena to Paris, shedding light on a shadowy Soviet operation called "Red Silence" led by General Ogarkov, which intends to influence Western politics through manipulation and assassination. In Paris, Richter teams up with Alexandre Costa, an old friend working for British Intelligence. Together, they uncover Clara Durand, a GRU assassin working for Ogarkov, targeting key international figures. Their efforts to protect targets reveal betrayal at the heart of the conspiracy, as Costa is killed during a confrontation, adding personal stakes to Richter’s mission.
Elena, revealed to not only be alive but operating with her own motives, joins Richter reluctantly. She confesses a personal vendetta against Ogarkov, who had her father unjustly killed. Through collaboration with British Intelligence, they realize that Ogarkov intends to fund his operation with Nazi gold through Swiss banks, with the help of Kessler, a banker involved in financing illegal operations, further increasing the stakes of their mission.
Act 3: Lisbon
The final act unfolds in Lisbon, Portugal, where the daring trio--Richter, Elena, and Elliot Dunn, a British Intelligence officer--converges on Ogarkov's coastal estate. They are joined by unexpected allies from the KGB who also seek to end Ogarkov's rogue operation. Tension builds as they confront the reality of Mosebey's betrayal and Ogarkov’s audacious plan to destabilize Western governments.
A carefully orchestrated assault on the estate culminates in high-stakes action sequences, but not without personal costs. Clara Durand proves a formidable adversary, engaging in a deadly cat-and-mouse game with Richter and Elena. Elena ultimately kills Clara, avenging her father, while Richter captures Ogarkov, who is handed over to the KGB to face justice.
Richter and Elena, emotionally scarred yet hopeful for the future, prepare to leave behind the chaotic and morally ambiguous world of espionage. Though a door has been left open by Elliot Dunn that Richter may walk through… eventually. Their evolving relationship hints at a new beginning, free from the shadows of the past.
The screenplay effectively combines elements of espionage, romance, and action, driving a narrative that spans across pivotal Cold War locations—Berlin, Paris, and Lisbon—each adding unique cultural and historical richness to the unfolding drama.
