In 1930s Vienna, with German nationalism and antisemitism on the rise, a repressed classical pianist and a rebellious young violinist begin a forbidden romance, awakening buried desires and forcing them to confront the emotional repression imposed by societal norms and a controlling husband, all set to the haunting backdrop of music, unspoken desire and a world holding its breath as Hitler prepares to take over Europe.
