When the daughter of a U.S. Senator is brutally murdered in Seattle, mirroring the unsolved killings of young women in London, British journalist Jory Ackerman is drawn back into a nightmare from her past. Battling her own demons, Jory must navigate a web of political intrigue and personal vendettas to unmask a serial killer who is disturbingly connected to her.
SYNOPSIS:
The story follows Jory Ackerman, an investigative journalist with the Guardian newspaper in London. Five years ago, Jory documented the unsolved murders of five young women in London. The killer was never caught but seems to have an obsession with Jory, who ended up checking herself into a psychiatric hospital shortly after finishing the story.
Now, Jory is pulled into another murder case when Jessica Cantwell, the 22-year-old daughter of a US Senator, goes missing in the San Juan Islands in Washington state while on a camping trip with her boyfriend. Her body is later found murdered in an abandoned shack, killed in the same way as the London victims. The FBI investigates, believing it could be the same killer and that Jory's involvement in the London case has led the killer to target Jessica.
Jory flies to Seattle, under the auspices of aiding the investigation at the request of her editor and a London police contact. However, we learn that her deceased father’s “handler” for the Security Services, Arthur, has recruited Jory and uses her to uncover a much larger and dangerous plot. She meets with FBI Agent Katie Engel and Jessica's grieving parents, Senator James Cantwell and his wife Elizabeth. The Senator has political ambitions backed by billionaire Swedish shipping magnate Erik Bengtsson, a close family friend.
Investigating the shack where Jessica was held, Jory recognizes the killer's patterns - Jessica was tranquilized and tortured before being killed by a stab wound to the heart. The killer also carved the Roman numeral "VI" into her neck, continuing the numbering from the five victims in London.
Jory receives mysterious messages from an unknown number, taunting her about Jessica's death. She continues to be haunted by her trauma in London, having graphic flashbacks. But she is determined to see this new case through.
As the investigation unfolds, Jory learns more about the key players: Jessica's heartbroken family, the ambitious Senator Cantwell and his political team, and the powerful billionaire Bengtsson, whose interest is much deeper than we are led to believe.
Attending Jessica's memorial service, Arthur turns up and implies Bengtsson warrants more scrutiny and promises to send Jory background information on him. That night, Jory gets another message from the killer, warning that she is a long way from London.
Jory starts to wonder if the killer has ties to Bengtsson or someone within the Senator's ambitious circle, and if Jessica's murder is at all connected to her father's political aspirations. She continues working closely with the FBI while fearing for her own safety as the killer seems to be taunting her every move.
The Pilot episode launches the story forward, promising a much deeper and dangerous outcome.
