GENRE: Thriller / Suspense
LOGLINE:

When a Chinese professor is kidnapped and renditioned back to China from the U.S., days before the start of international trade talks in Hong Kong, the ill-timed action turns a pro-democracy rally deadly and forces a young American diplomat and a veteran journalist to uncover the truth and help avert a global crisis.

SYNOPSIS:

In the early morning mist of Berkeley Hills, Professor Andrew Chen, a respected pro-democracy advocate, sets out for his morning walk with his dog. Without warning, he is violently abducted by a team of Chinese operatives and shipped in a private jet to an unknown location in China. His kidnapping is captured by a neighbor's doorbell camera, setting off alarms in international security and diplomatic circles.

In Hong Kong, amid the bustling streets and towering skyscrapers, Gillian Hall, a sharp-minded American diplomat stationed at the U.S. Consulate, is entangled in a clandestine affair with Christopher Beckett, the sophisticated but conflicted British Consul General. Gillian’s world is thrown into chaos when she learns of Chen’s abduction, which threatens the success of imminent trade talks critical to U.S.-China relations. Her position within the consulate and personal ties with Beckett plunge her into a web of intrigue as she’s approached by both by the CIA and MI6 to identify a spy working for the Chinese against both governments. To further complicate things, her lover is the likely suspect of the internal spy hunt and his wife, Lee Beckett, his Chinese handler. Torn by her love and loyalty to Beckett and her duty to her country, Gillian agrees to find the truth, believing Beckett to be innocent.

Meanwhile, Professor Chen endures brutal captivity in a dingy Chinese prison where he’s interrogated and beaten by the architect of the kidnapping, General Xin, a ruthless government official intent on sabotaging the trade talks to further his ultra-nationalist agenda. Chen’s disappearance sparks outrage throughout the gathering of student protesters and fears from the organizers that this will ignite violence on the level of the deadly 2019 protests – a tragic episode in Hong Kong’s transformation toward mainland rule.

Gillian’s close friend and mentor, Peter Eastland, the much-lauded journalist for the American Cable News network is the reporter “on the ground” and covering the growing fear of violence by the protesters. His unwavering reporting quickly become a thorn General Xin can no longer tolerate. When Xin discovers that Eastland and his photographer, Tom Ho, witness and photograph Xin’s soldiers preparing dozens of Molotov cocktails to be used during the protest, he orders his men to stop them. Tom Ho is violently attacked and his camera stolen. Fortunately, Ho gave Eastland a thumb drive with the evidence before he was attacked, allowing him to pass it to Gillian so she can get it to people who can stop the inevitable.

As Chen's captivity continues, his resolve faces its greatest test as the video of his abduction is blasted across the internet by a team of Chinese hackers on the orders of General Xi. From the streets of Hong Kong to the floor of the U.N, the visceral reality of Chen’s fate escalates and the violence on the ground of the trade talks begins.

The streets of Hong Kong become a war zone with Chinese soldiers facing off with the young protesters. When General Xi’s soldiers, disguised as student protesters, escalate the turmoil by deploying the Molotov cocktails among the crowd. The volatile mix of fear and anger is ignited further when military operatives execute the student leaders in cold blood, a move designed to silence voices for democracy and deepen the international crisis.

In the riveting final sequence of confrontations -- Eastland is killed in front of Gillian by a Chinese agent. CIA and MI6 agents attempt to intercept Lee Beckett’s escape initially fails but she’s eventually captured in London. Intelligence networks close the noose around Ian Wesley, the CIA station chief and the traitor working against the U.S. The daring rescue of Dr. Chen from his captors is successful. General Xin is taken into custody. And in a fitting ending, Zhao Xi, the powerful head of the Politburo and mastermind of the conspiracy, meets a calculated end.

With Beckett recalled to London, Gillian finds herself at a crossroads both personally and professionally. We are left to believe, with the loss of friends and the realization that her work is truly vital to the world -- she will survive.
