When a magical flying fish chooses a disillusioned fisherman as its guardian, he must reconcile
his father's ancient beliefs with modern reality to save his dying coastal town. Aided by the
mysterious creature, he transforms the polluted harbour into a network of living canals,
confronting his father's former friend-turned-corrupt harbour master who threatens everything
they're building.
SYNOPSIS:
Opening: Dawn breaks over a fishing town. Young Rami struggles with a heavy net while his
father secures their small boat. His father produces a worn wooden bucket, teaching him the
sacred ritual: "For every safe return, we give five fish back to Aritareh, god of the sea." As
Rami approaches the water's edge, he slips, spilling the fish. Their neighbour mockingly laughs
with his young son: "Stop filling his head with nonsense! Teach him how to catch more fish
instead." Rami's father simply squeezes his son's hand and leads him home, whispering, "They
understand nothing of balance."
Thirty Years Later: Rami works his father's now-rusting boat alone, pulling up nets heavy with
plastic waste rather than fish. In his bucket, a single, silvery flying fish flops among the
garbage. At the waterfront, he encounters Ghalib, once his father's friend, now a corrupt
harbour master grown rich from industrial fishing bribes. As Ghalib demands to see nonexistent permits, Rami performs his ritual, returning the flying fish to the sea. But the fish,
mysteriously, keeps jumping back into his bucket.
The Unlikely Companion: Bemused, Rami takes the persistent fish home in a water-filled
bottle. That evening, as Rami watches an old cartoon featuring a mermaid, the fish becomes
transfixed, comically bumping against the glass to get closer to the TV. A moment of
connection forms between man and fish, leading to an unlikely friendship. The fish, which
Rami names Sirocco, accompanies him everywhere – watching TV, riding in the boat, even
seeming to understand Rami's lonely conversations.
Strange things begin happening. Other sea creatures start seeking refuge with Rami – injured
turtles, lost dolphins, even species thought extinct. Each time Sirocco swims near them, their
wounds heal faster, and the water around them becomes clearer. Rami, initially reluctant to
help due to years of cynicism, finds his father's hope rekindling within him.
The Conflict Deepens: Ghalib grows suspicious of Rami's sudden success at finding fish in the
depleted waters. We learn that Ghalib once owned a small fishing boat himself, but lost
everything to debt, driving him to betray his principles for industrial fishing money. Now, he
sees Rami's traditional ways as a threat to his carefully constructed empire.
When Rami starts helping other struggling fishermen find clean waters, Ghalib retaliates by
threatening to expose those who fish without proper permits. He evicts Rami from his
waterfront home, planning to demolish it for a new industrial pier.
The Turning Point: Forced to release his rescued sea creatures, Rami remembers his father's
stories about Aritareh's power to move oceans. That night, Sirocco's scales begin to glow with
bioluminescent patterns, seemingly communicating with other sea creatures. Understanding
dawns on Rami – Sirocco isn't just a flying fish; it's a messenger from Aritareh.
The Canal Project: Rami begins digging canals in his backyard, guided by Sirocco's mysterious
light patterns. When he hits bedrock and nearly gives up, other fishermen's children discover
his work. Word spreads, and gradually, the town's fishermen join him, each bringing their own
knowledge of the sea's ancient paths.
They work at night, creating a network of canals throughout the town. Each successful channel
brings immediate results – cleaner water, returning fish, and children no longer getting sick
from swimming in the polluted harbour. The town's younger generation, previously leaving for
factory jobs, starts returning to help.
The Confrontation: Ghalib, seeing his power base eroding, reveals his ultimate plan: a massive
industrial port that would destroy the remaining fishing grounds. He threatens to expose the
illegal canal project and arrest everyone involved. But when a violent storm threatens both the
industrial ships and the town's fishing boats, Sirocco leads a massive school of fish to help
guide the boats to safety through the new canals.
Resolution: The town transforms into a series of living waterways, with Rami's home becoming
a centrepiece of marine conservation. Ghalib, witnessing the revival of the fishing industry he
once loved, finally understands what Rami's father tried to teach them both about balance. The
film ends with Rami teaching a new generation the ritual of giving back, while Sirocco leaps
joyfully through the canals, its scales glowing with the light of ancient wisdom renewed.
Final Image: A young girl performs the ritual of returning fish to the sea, but now instead of
five fish, she returns one – symbolizing that the sea, finally in balance, needs less help from
humans. Sirocco watches from nearby, its scales glowing softly in recognition of a promise
kept.
