About Mariah

I’ve always been a storyteller. As a costume designer collaborating with directors, playwrights and designers for 30 years, I tell stories with clothes. Most of my experience is in Shakespeare. My work in other genres includes Broadway, National Tours, Off-Broadway and Regional Theater. I always intended to be a writer, but was enticed away by design. It has taken me 3 decades and 3 children to get back to writing. This TV Pilot is based on a real woman. Aphra Behn was the first Englishwoman to earn a living as a writer. She is every woman. We know very little about her but we can fill in the blanks. She would be thrilled to be the heroine of this femme-adventure. Women will appreciate her struggle with credit for her accomplishments amongst the patriarchy and her novel approach to conquering it. She was a spy, mistress, writer, wife, widow and wit of the 17th century. She exploited men’s exploitation. This is not our grandma’s costume drama.
