Kat Spencer "When I'm writing a first draft I'm constantly reminding myself that I'm simply shoveling sand into a box so that later I can build castles." — Jordan Peele
Kat Spencer One of my favorites is simple but always gets me back to the page: “You can’t edit a blank page.” It’s such a grounding reminder that the words don’t have to be perfect, they just have to exist so I have something to shape and refine later.
And when I’m really second-guessing myself, I come back to this one from Martha Graham: “It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how valuable, nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly.”
That always reminds me to trust the process and just write.
"If I waited for perfection I wouldn't write a single word."
Whatever is considered "perfect" or a "masterpiece" can be totally subjective. Even if you have a majority liking something you will always find the one who does not like it. I'm training myself every day to keep this in mind and it helps me a lot to not chase perfection as it would be a waste of time. I improve to be the best version of myself and then I train myself to be confident about my skills. There's always something new to learn and that's not a bad thing. This mindset helps me a lot to keep going and keep writing.
Kat Spencer mine is "First draft is s*it" because it pushes forward while navigating through a terrifying mess! But also "You can't edit a blank page", as Ashley Renee Smith remembered. Both related to the struggles of writing and the temptation to give up.
Kat Spencer great quote from "Bird by Bird," a must-read for any aspiring novelist. Another quote that always helps me is from Jodi Picoult: "You can't edit a blank page."
