HI All, last year I hosted a stall at a London Film & TV Job Fair and I had the chance to speak with aspiring directors, writers, producers, composers, and others passionate about filmmaking. While the event was primarily aimed at those seeking work opportunities within the UK film and TV industry, I attended because I felt many attendees might also be aspiring filmmakers, or those involved with films, wanting to discuss their projects—or even just ideas they’re considering. I wanted to offer my support, whether through practical advice or simply a bit of reassurance. The advice I shared is rooted in my own indie filmmaking experiences over the past decade, particularly my journey of making a no-budget debut feature film over five years. Below is a link to a video of that event, maybe some others here might find some of it useful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7kEQIT9LxU

Fantastic video, Steve Conway! A lot of helpful advice and insight, like what you said about filmmakers building stories with what they have around them. I tried to make two feature films way back. The first film was a big-budget Sci-Fi Action Adventure (big mistake), but the second movie took place in a small town where I had access to, and I could’ve used everyday things for props and things. Thanks for sharing the video.

This is fantastic, Steve Conway! Events like these are so valuable, especially for aspiring filmmakers looking for both inspiration and practical advice. The fact that you took the time to support and reassure others based on your own indie filmmaking journey is something that really resonates. Making a no-budget feature over five years is no small feat, and I’m sure your insights were incredibly helpful to those just starting out. I’ll definitely check out the video, thanks for sharing!
What’s the piece of advice you found yourself giving out most often at the event?

Hi all, lovely to meet you, and thank you for the kind comments—I appreciate it. Regarding the most common piece of advice given, it was a mixed bag, really, but if I had to choose one thing, it would be the importance of reassurance and discussing how to approach putting your project together without relying on huge budgets, funding bodies, production companies, committees, or the film industry at large—and without waiting for their approval, acceptance, or involvement to bring your film to life.
