The original meaning of the song is about how a woman can control a man with a ring around her finger. But in the end the man regains control and changes the relationship. The ring is the ongoing theme started in the original Hobbit book and movie. As I show in this video, All the characters in the story think they can control each other and the ring. But in the end it is the ring that is controlling them. The reason why Gollum looks the way he does is because he is what happens when the ring completely controls you. He is obsessed by it. In a way Gollum is wrapped around the rings finger.
