I came across this wonderful video by Corey Mandell where he describes how important it is to be able to distill all of you script complexities and themes into the one core theme on your work. It is very thought provoking and important to screenwriting... So, what is your central theme in your spec script?

Curt, I'd have to say perseverance is the central theme in all the stuff I've written...the idea of never giving up.
I will start us off with my script, Jingle Bell Rock. LOGLINE: "A desperate mother of a severely handicapped child tries to win a Jingle Bell Rock radio contest to support her child. Along the way a mysterious benefactor comes to her rescue." The central theme for my script is abandonment. Shortly after Tyler was born it became apparent that he had a debilitating condition called epidermolysis bullosa...most of these children don't live much past their 20s. Jen's husband developed severe depression, resulting in the complete abandonment of his family, leaving Jen alone to take care of her sick child. Jen pours all of her emotions and efforts into taking care of Tyler, fearful to bring anybody into her life. Abandonment is at the core of my script...

I've taken several of his courses. He understands story better than anyone I've come across.
