How I put together a short film proposal

Several weeks ago, someone in the financing lounge posted a link to the Vimeo short film grant. I took it as a sign and finalized ten pages of my current feature project HAUNTED CIRCUITS. I submitted that segment along with prepro materials like budget, schedule, logline, summary, and artist statement.

I've posted most of those materials on my blog at:

Do I expect to win? No, that would be a long shot.

But I did this to prove to myself the viability of the project I'm writing. Also, I wanted to be able to share these materials with the writers here.

A lot of what writers do is write ABOUT their writing. Can you explain yourself? And if you're going to direct, do you know how to plan?

I see a lot of people here posting loglines and AI generated posters for their scripts. That's fine, but I feel I can get a better sense of someone's strengths as a writer by reading a summary or actual script pages. Hopefully this will inspire others to share more of their work. Be inspired! Ask me questions! Alternatively, feel free to poke holes in my screenplay and challenge me on what I'm doing.

This is also a stepping stone, a way to keep motivated to work on the project. This is the middle section of the longer feature. The project could also work as a series of connected shorts that build to feature length.

Thanks for sharing how you put together a short film proposal, Mike Boas. The proposal is incredible, and Haunted Circuits sounds interesting! A Gothic Horror story with a Sci-Fi twist. The animation looks fantastic!

Thank you for sharing, Mike! I agree sharing actual work rather than AI generated posters and log lines is preferable. I'll admit I'm still in the AI poster/logline camp, but working towards swimming to the deep end of the pool.
