Filmmaking / Directing : Apps for filmmakers? by Anthony McBride

Apps for filmmakers?

Hey all,

I'm rediscovering filmmaking and am looking for all of the useful apps necessary in making a film. So far, I have a viewfinder app and a lighting app on my phone.

Any other suggestions?

I use Shotdeck sometimes. It helps when I'm describing what I want. There is also Hollyview. This one makes a video village right on your phone. I'm shooting something next month and will be using both again.

Great question, Anthony McBride, there are some fantastic apps out there that can seriously streamline your process, whether you’re on set or in pre-production. A few tried-and-true options to consider:

- Shot Designer (by Hollywood Camera Work): Excellent for pre-vis and blocking out your shots with camera and actor movement.

- Artemis Pro: A powerful director’s viewfinder with tons of lens and camera simulation options.

- Cine Meter II or Lux Light Meter Pro: Helpful for gauging lighting conditions and exposure on the go.

- Green Screener: Surprisingly effective for checking even lighting on green screens.

- Sun Surveyor: Crucial for tracking the sun's position for natural light planning.

Scriptation is one to use for scripts to start but all notes regarding anything you need, can add photos, some of the other apps allow uploads to it. Shot Lister.

Ashley Renee Smith Thanks for this, Ashley. I have the viewfinder already and will look into the others.

Xochi Blymyer Thanks for the suggestion. I'll definitely need a script breakdown resource.
