Librettist / Lyricist Needed for New Musical Adaptation
Big City Theater is looking for a librettist/lyricist to join a new musical adaptation of William Saroyan’s one-act play Hello Out There.
The story takes place in a small-town jail, where a young man, falsely accused and locked in a cell, forms a brief but deeply emotional connection with a young woman who works at the jail. The piece is intimate, poetic, and dramatic, with themes of loneliness, hope, injustice, and human connection.
We are looking for someone to write lyrics for approximately 5–6 songs, working closely with the composer and director. The book/dialogue structure is already based on the original play, so the main task is creating song texts that fit the characters, story, and emotional arc.
Responsibilities:
Write lyrics for 5–6 songs
Collaborate with the composer on song structure and revisions
Adapt the emotional tone of the play into musical moments
Participate in a limited number of creative discussions/revisions
Ideal candidate:
Has experience writing lyrics, musical theater material, poetry, or dramatic text
Can write emotionally direct, character-driven lyrics
Is comfortable collaborating with a composer and director
Understands intimate, actor-driven theater
This is a small independent theater production with a limited budget.
