Recognizing the injustice of the mines he took action, becoming a union organizer. The union went on strike. Miners and their families were kicked out of their company housing. They set up a camp on a barren plain called Ludlow. Fighting broke out between miners and mine guards. The National Guard was called in to keep the peace. An uneasy standoff ensued. Tikas and a captain in the Guard, Philip Van Cise, worked together to avert violence. They ultimately failed when company thugs and rogue elements of the National Guard attacked the miners’ camp, killing 18 men, women and children.
