Following a bombing that kills her and her siblings, ten-year-old Malak awakens in a red desert existing between life and death where a jackal-headed god weighs their souls against the horrors they endured. One by one, their past is judged—not for what they did, but for who they became.
SYNOPSIS:
Following an IDF airstrike and her death, ten-year-old Malak finds herself in a blood-red desert where Anubis, the ancient reaper of souls, awaits them. She and her siblings are weighed one by one—each child’s heart revealing small acts of love and courage they clung to in order to preserve their soul. Though as Malak’s turn nears, the rage and grief she carries threaten to tip the scale against her. Blending mythic horror with real-world trauma, this short story explores the innocence of children caught in a brutal genocide—and asks what justice means when the world looks away.
