REMEMBER (HOUR DRAMA PILOT & SERIES BIBLE)

REMEMBER (HOUR DRAMA PILOT & SERIES BIBLE)
By Sean Wathen

GENRE: Sci-fi, Crime
LOGLINE:

Inception & Minority Report meet The Black List - An elite team of F.B.I. Special Agents use a new experimental technology to enter the memories of criminals & witnesses to solve cases.

SYNOPSIS:

Special Agents Emily Clark and Michael Colter lead a specialized department of the F.B.I. that apprehends criminals based on knowledge provided by going inside the memories of various suspects, witnesses, etc. The series combines elements of neo-noir, whodunit, thriller and science fiction genres, as well as the classic mystery when our main characters discover a John Doe who has created a serum that can erase targeted memories and even replace someone's memories with that of another person. This current division of the F.B.I. is restricted to the DC area, but an impending review by the District Attorney and an upcoming vote could spread this technology across the United States. If this wasn’t enough pressure, the creator of the memory device (long thought dead) resurfaces with plans to shut the entire system down. And he just so happens to be Agent Emily Clark’s father.

The entire team of Agents is a diverse, multicultural, multi-generational squad. Every viewer will find someone they can connect with.

The world of “Remember” is the world of tomorrow. Not 50 years from now, but tomorrow. A world just on the horizon. The sci-fi elements of the setting are fully brought to life with the Mnemosyne. The Mnemosyne is the machine that makes it possible for an Agent to go into the memories of a “Client.” A criminal or witness is brought into this special division of the FBI. They’re given Etoxclidine to relax their neural pathways. It puts them in a dream-like state. Allows their mind to open - susceptible - to prompts. From there, the Tech Genius Agent Skye “Ziggy” Freeman hacks the neuroanatomy of the memory by accessing the hippocampus, the amygdala, striatum, or the mammillary bodies involved with a specific memory. The Agent is put under in a similar fashion and is then sent into the mind of the client to view their memories. They see what the client saw, nothing more. Inside, the Agents can feel the memory guiding them. However, should they try to change something within the memory, it collapses. By changing the memory, it is no longer a memory, it is something new, so it collapses in the client’s mind. All of this tech will be shown in a grounded manner to make it easy to pick up and follow. And also thrilling to watch!

“Remember” is more than just a “crime of the week” show, it’s more than a weekly “whodunit.” Sure, it will have some of those elements, but this show will spark discussion and deep thoughts. Using memories and how they generate the soul and who we are – and the idea of someone entering your memories (or you entering someone else’s) – what that does to one’s psyche – the moral quandaries of it all. We want to create something thought-provoking while being wrapped in a fun package.

Reviews from the Black List website (blcklist.com):

Black List Review #1:

"The premise is original and smart, evoking FRINGE and INCEPTION in its presentation of an FBI team tasked with entering memories in pursuit of evidence. The script's treatment of memories, featuring subtle differences from reality, makes the concept even more emotionally engaging, particularly in an exchange later in the pilot. The story moves along at a nice clip, each act complicating the plot and raising the stakes in dramatic and surprising ways. Just about every beat feels like it's firing on all cylinders."

Black List Review #2:

"This is a compelling crime drama with an intriguing science fiction premise at its core. The idea of using a criminal's memories to solve crimes is enticing, and raises a host of technical and philosophical questions that challenge the show's characters in interesting ways. EMILY is a strong protagonist, tough and smart enough to hold her own but damaged from relationships and loss in her own life. Her past is shrouded in mystery, and the twist in her relationship with SPERLING is intriguing and unexpected. Emily's relationship with JAMES is the strongest in the script, and the two go from enemies to partners over the course of the episode in a way that says a lot about their characters. The episode moves with a quick pace, and none of the scenes overstay their welcome. The action sequences are exciting and well-written, and the scenes where the agents go inside the memories of criminals are a lot of fun to watch."
