With their lives already at a crossroads, five teenagers sneak out one night and accidentally discover an alien spacecraft, which suddenly thrusts them out into space where they find themselves to be humanity's only hope against the threat of invasion.

"In terms of capturing the spirit of classic 1990s young adult adventure films, the author has done a very good job of bringing all the whimsy, angst and over the top adventure of the era. What's more, the fact that the tensions between the two pairs of siblings are reflections of one another goes a long way towards showing a range of character growth." In 1999, 14-year-olds Charlie, Neil, and Harper, along with Harper's 17-year-old sister Fritzy, are united in their love of the video game "Starcraft", but their inability to work together as a team prevents them from reaching victory. The four used to play alongside Charlie's older brother, Alex, but he has become determined to cast aside "childish" things to appear more grown up.

One night, Charlie and Alex's parents stun the two of them by revealing their plans to divorce (which will mean that Charlie will have to go live with his mom in the city, away from his friends). Devastated by this news, Charlie sneaks out that night to meet Harper and Neil to observe a meteor shower (and possibly run away from home). Along the way, he steals a car battery from his brother Alex's car to power a homemade device of Neil's. Alex observes this and alerts Fritzy. When they all converge, they discover a spacecraft and accidentally activate it, sending the group to space. They rendezvous with a cruiser commanded by the Jarkusians, a race of alien’s intent on conquering the earth. Now the five teenagers must stop the alien invasion and make it home in time for dinner.

Out of this World is "a very fun science fiction young adult adventure."
