VIKTORY

VIKTORY
By Kimberly Wehr

GENRE: Family, Drama
LOGLINE:

After being abandoned, a young girl pursues her dream of becoming a ballerina in the middle of a custody battle between her foster family and her uncle.

SYNOPSIS:

VIKTORY HILL is in the same predicament that young black girls 'who would be primas' have been in for decades. The chips are stacked against her in more ways than one. Her mother TRISHA struggles to raise Viktory and younger sister MARCEE alone, and can't afford expensive lessons. When they are evicted from their home, Trisha leaves the girls at a church while she seeks out her estranged brother CHARLIE - a recently returned soldier struggling to get back into civilian life - but never returns.

Viktory and Marcee become wards of 'the system', fraught with fear, uncertainty, and monsters behind different faces - even those of the people whose duty it is to care for them. They find a fierce advocate in their social worker CANDICE who is determined to find the right home for them, whether that be with Charlie, or ANNA & DAVID JOHNSON, an ideal middle class couple. Charlie, reeling from a recent divorce, initially refuses to take them in. The girls find their way to the Johnsons', where over time they warm up to a new family and a whole new world of opportunities.

These opportunities come hand in hand with new challenges. Viktory struggles to build confidence and establish her own identity in white suburbia, while her foster mother Anna grapples with unexpected prejudice within herself, their community, and the ballet school. Anna is determined to prove that love crosses all divides, but when her marriage begins to fray and Charlie returns after a change of heart, she is faced with the biggest challenge yet. Bringing them all together.

Viktory is a one hour serial drama comparable to shows like Parenthood and This is us. After writing the pilot in 2019, I self produced a proof of concept which is now streaming online on Chicago's own OTV (formerly Open Television) and received the following accolades:
