By Bruce Leaf

GENRE: Drama, Family
LOGLINE: A promising high school quarterback learns that in a past life he made a mistake that cost the life of a friend, which explains why he’s uncomfortable being a leader on and off the field.

SYNOPSIS:

As star quarterback CHRIS BOWEN leads his high school team to another victory, he suffers a vicious hit to his head. After the game, Chris, his girlfriend, and two players go for a drive in the fog. An old man, a ghost whom the others can’t see, accosts Chris and they fight. His friends think he’s having a seizure caused by the injury and rush him home. It is the first of several encounters Chris has with the old man named NAT YORK. He reveals that Chris had been at the helm of a whaling boat in 1858 when a whale smashed it, killing a friend. That incident, York says, remains in Chris’ subconscious, causing him to doubt himself in critical situations. Chris can’t tell whether or not to believe the old man, but some of what he says rings true. All he really knows for sure is that his world is unraveling and he thinks he’s going crazy. He finds redemption when a rogue wave sweeps away his little sister and he reacts instantly, without thinking about the ramifications, and dives into the bitter cold ocean and nearly drowns trying to rescue her. Nat appears as Chris recovers on the beach and tells him he did the right thing by acting so quickly and not worrying about the consequences. Nat fades away and Chris is ready to move on – to the NFL.
