SYNOPSIS:

Centuries ago, an ancient civilization existed on a secluded Caribbean island where people believed that sacrificing someone’s life brought the living closer to immortality. After hundreds of sacrifices, a volcano erupted, burying the island under tons of lava and ash, killing everyone there. Five young people arrive on vacation at a beautiful resort that now rests where this civilization once thrived. They are immediately enchanted by the place but soon sense that things are amiss in paradise. Led by KAYLEE, who studied anthropology in college, they find weird drawings on rock walls, old stone statues, and a burial ground. Kaylee and BROCK, an Afghan war veteran, find that one tomb opens into a tunnel that leads to an underground chamber where sacrifices were made. Scratches on a stone table show how many people died there. Skulls line the ceiling, and when blood drips onto Kaylee, they flee in fear. Two deranged, murderous men, NICOLI and ALVARO, who work at the resort, know the ancients believed that if a thousand people are sacrificed the survivors would become immortal, so the two are killing guests one by one to reach that number. Nicoli and Alvaro escaped from a now-abandoned mental facility on the island and need just a few more sacrifices to reach one thousand. They target Kaylee and her friends. On another exploration of the island, Kaylee, her boyfriend CHAZ, and Brock encounter a strange woman living alone in an isolated hut who practices voodoo. She warns them that the volcano is coming to life and to get off the island before everyone dies, but they ignore her warning. Meanwhile, their friends, ASHTON, who has money and wants more, and his girlfriend, GISELLE, who lives to work, are captured, tortured, and killed by the two murderers. Kaylee, Chaz, and Brock find their bodies and realize the voodoo woman was right. Brock stays with the bodies but is killed by Nicoli and Alvaro while Kaylee and Chaz get help. Kaylee and Chaz need to get off the island but can’t. Because the volcano is about to erupt, guests at the resort were evacuated while the five friends were exploring and no boats or planes are available. There is no phone or Internet service. Kaylee and Chaz are trapped on the island where a murderer is on the loose and the volcano is about to blow. Frantic, they report the deaths of their two friends to the only people remaining at the resort – Nicoli and Alvaro – who say they’ll retrieve the bodies. Kaylee and Chaz check on the two men to make sure they are getting the bodies but find Brock and the voodoo woman are also dead, and Nicoli and Alvaro are responsible and are throwing the bodies into a fiery pit. As the volcano rumbles ominously, the ground shakes, and lava flows, Chaz believes their only chance to stay alive is to attack the killers, but when he does, they overpower and throw him into the pit. Kaylee tries to save him but fails. She does manage to kill Nicoli, which enrages Alvaro. He comes after her, trapping her on the beach as lava flows by her feet. She plunges into the ocean to escape but sharks attack her. Alvaro gets her body and as he sacrifices it to the mountain, rescuers from a newly arrived ship come ashore. Alvaro, believing he is immortal, smiles in anticipation of more victims.
