An outstanding criminal defense attorney reinvents himself as a rock singer and soon finds himself caught in the crossfire of handling two divergent careers plus a rocky new love relationship with a free-spirited young woman.
SYNOPSIS:
Jack Daniels on the Rocks is a riveting, rollicking, entertaining romantic comedy that is a medley of laughs, drama, rock ‘n’ roll and courtroom theatrics.
Jack Daniels is an outstanding criminal defense attorney who finally indulges his lifelong dream and reinvents himself as a rock singer whose voice is reminiscent of The Doors’ Jim Morrison. He becomes the vocalist for a classic rock band named Coffee Mate, a knockoff of the legendary supergroup Cream.
Coffee Mate is populated with talented but quirky musicians whose day jobs are polar opposite to Jack’s. Lead guitarist Toad, born Bernie Silverstein, is a clerk in a gun gallery. Bassist Bones McKinney solders wires in a factory. Drummer Pudge Klumpf slaughters pigs in a meat manufacturing plant. Rhythm guitarist Ziggy Zmroczek sorts guitar strings in a music store.
Jack soon finds himself caught in the crossfire of handling two divergent careers plus a rocky new love relationship with the free-spirited Ashley Dupree, whose lack of filter is a detriment to the lawyer in him while a delight to the rocker in him and causes them to separate briefly.
Ashley then has three critical intersections with Jack’s legal career.
First as a defendant falsely accused of cocaine possession in which he has her acquitted.
Then she breaks up with Jack again after he successfully defends a client who was charged with the rape of her best friend who later committed suicide. Ashley, a hair stylist, reconciles with Jack only after a customer tells her how Jack’s remarkable defense of her husband falsely accused of murdering his mother gave them their lives back.
And finally, Jack defends the son of the mayor, a minister and implausible former boyfriend of the irreverent Ashley, who has been falsely accused of murdering the daughter of the police chief and is acquitted after Ashley proves to be a major asset by testifying that she was with him the night of the murder and has visual evidence to prove it.
While all of this is transpiring, Jack is straddling a tightrope juggling the demands of two starkly different worlds. Coffee Mate’s music goes viral on YouTube, which leads to a recording contract with a major music label and a concert tour amplified by Ashley, with a voice straight out of Janis Joplin’s throat, joining the group as a second vocalist.
With their lives and contrasting temperaments intertwined legally and musically, Jack and Ashley make wedding plans and in a tour de force of resolve, energy and compartmentalization, Jack plans to keep juggling both careers.
