While on hiatus in the summer of 1969, a touring musician must confront his past during an extended stay with his estranged wife and children.

SYNOPSIS:

Act 1

Sonny plays his final show of the season in Las Vegas before returning home to spend the summer with his wife and children. Although Sonny seems to be something of a local celebrity, all of the relationships within his family have become strained from his years as an absent father. Sonny’s wife, Jo, is cheating on him with her boss. Oldest child Lisa doesn’t respect her father in the least bit. Oldest son, Pete, is desperately seeking his father’s attention and approval. Youngest child, Tommy, is disabled but has dreams of becoming an astronaut.

Act 2

Adapting his “leader of the band” mentality, Sonny tries to regain control of the family. He swallows his pride and takes a job playing with a local band after learning a young man named Ron is involved. Ron is the son of Sonny’s deceased best friend and upon meeting Lisa, the couple begin to date. Pete finds a father figure in an older man he meets at a bar. Lisa finds out that her mother Jo is carrying on an affair. Sonny is in the dark about nearly all of this until the night of the moon landing, the same night he gives Tommy a dose of the truth and shatters his dreams of going to space. When Pete explores his sexuality while experimenting with drugs it leads to disastrous consequences.

Act 3

After Pete’s near-death experience, Jo leaves Sonny and takes the boys with her. Lisa runs off with, and Sonny is left with only weeks to make things right before heading back out on the road. Sonny makes every effort to keep Lisa’s hopes of going to college alive. When Jo returns with the boys, Sonny makes an effort to connect with Pete through their shared interest in music. He also patches things up with Tommy. We learn that Sonny had an affair with his best friend’s wife decades ago, and fears that Ron may be his son. Jo has been aware of it all along, and accepting it begins her healing process with Sonny. In the end Sonny decides not to go back out on the road, and instead sets down roots and remain with his family.

Hi Scott, Thanks for connecting. See you are in Durham too. If you send contact info maybe we can connect directly. I am working on a screenplay that would be nice to discuss with another writer.
