When ruthless mercenaries storm her office building, a woman-child HR rep who recently failed her concealed handgun license exam is forced to spend her 30th birthday single-handedly saving the hostages.
SYNOPSIS:
VALERIE "VAL" GILEESE (30) shows up late and buzzed to the home of her brother JOS (33) to find a surprise birthday party. She ditches adult conversations in favor of Nerf gun battles with the other guest's kids and ends up losing every single one. Presents include a shiny new purse, 9mm gun, and Concealed Handgun License class gift card for Sunday.
Val shows up for work Monday at the Winford Corporation's office campus in all her birthday presents. She reveals she failed the shooting portion of the test. On arriving at the HR floor, Val has choice language for the rowdy interns. It's all made better when Val "bumps" into ROBERT, her office crush. Her birthday wish is a kiss. She only gets half-hearted well wishes. The HR head, SHARON (50s), calls Val to her office and demands she live up to her potential. Sharon is the only one Val wants to please.
Terrorists led by MAKSIM (55) overtake the building by posing as caterers and tour guests. They kill many and take others as hostages. They reach the executive floor, and ALEXEI (Maksim's henchman) does not shy away from killing the CTO, even as their tech objects. Mr. Winford is nowhere to be found but has remained in the building.
Val hides from the carnage in her office but is spotted by a terrorist. He chases her around the floor and back into her office where she shoots him through her new purse with the 9mm handgun. Although Val wants to leave immediately, she heads back for Sharon, who convinces her to help others even though Val does not want to kill again.
Officer DUNBAR (35) is the first cop on the scene and is forced to retreat as terrorists shoot at him, making him a mockery as the "real" cops arrive.
Hostages kept in the cafeteria panic as it is revealed there will be no other hostages, the wounded are being killed, and the children in the daycare being searched for. The guards pick a woman to escort into supply closets.
Val finds Robert who is overjoyed to see her. He laughs at the offer to help fight the terrorists. She must take the elevator alone. As the doors open, two terrorists are stunned to see an armed woman. Val mows them down by using the slow-opening door as cover. When her gun runs out of bullets, she must kill another terrorist by using scissors to stab him until she accidentally gets him through the eye.
Dunbar is assigned to a mobile communications unit after the police captain and negotiator show up. The first call is Val. He sees the two dead men by the elevators through the patched in security feed. The negotiator believes Val is posing as a hostage to play Dunbar.
Maksim discovers someone is fighting back, a vis major - an unavoidable accident or act of God. He immediately puts his plan into action by demanding the family members of his crew be released from Guantanamo Bay Prison. He agrees to exchange a hostage for medical supplies as a show of good faith.
Val is ready to leave and takes everyone to the main floor. She shoots one of the terrorists but is not ready for the automatic gun she took. Terrorists swarm and Val is forced to jam the door with the gun.
News of the Winford attack is on TV. Jos watches. He heads for Winford after his wife arrives.
A terrorist takes a hostage to the police and is subdued with beanbags. The negotiator questions him and sees the shoe bomb right before it goes off, killing them both and the police captain. Coworkers hiding from the terrorists bring Val to the break room. It's decorated for her birthday.
Maksim pretends to be furious with the police for letting this happen and intends to shoot a hostage if "the major" doesn't show himself. The hostage is Sharon. Maksim gives Val 10 seconds and is heard on the speakers throughout. Others hold Val back, knowing she will be killed as well. Sharon's son is part of the crowd outside and pleads for his mom's life. Maksim kills her when he gets to zero.
Val no longer wants to leave. She devises plans to take out as many of them she can, even as the terrorists adjust their plans for the major. After a few successful battles, Val takes a break in a conference room and calls Dunbar. Terrorists find Val but don't know she has Dunbar on Bluetooth. He gets snipers to take out the terrorists. Close call. Dunbar pleads with Val to get out. She refuses and instead agrees to look for the hostages.
Val is forced to pose as a hostage when the guards wrangle women from the bathroom. The women help her subdue the guards and leave through a hidden exit. A SNIPER takes out the hostages as they flee. In fury, Val tracks him to the gym but is no match for him. He traps her in the gym and sets it on fire. Val is forced to run through the fire and jump out a second story window to survive. But she can't get a foot out without the sniper getting her. She must go back in, even with severe burns.
Maksim finds Mr. Winford in a vault hidden in the dining room. Reveals he is there for the diamonds Winford won in a lawsuit. Maksim begins the final push: the execution of the daycare children unless the prisoners are released and safe passage guaranteed.
Val is curled in a ball away from it all. Dunbar calls and shows she is the only one who can stop this. Maksim counts from 10. Val is able to subdue the sniper and uses his gun to kill Alexei, even though it means she is captured.
Maksim uses Val as his hostage, foregoes the count, and puts his gun to her as the other terrorists each grab a child. They are simultaneously shot by the people Val has saved. Only Maksim survives. He takes Val into the vault and seals the door.
She fights back by literally pulling the rug out from under him. He puts a gun to her, but she pulls the slide back releasing each round of ammo until it is empty. They struggle, but she is able to get the empty gun, load a single round, and fire her only crack kill shot of the day.
Outside, Val breezes by Robert, is reunited with Jos, and gets a hug from Dunbar. He gets close enough to kiss her.
