COMMITMENT ISSUES
By Bertilda Duhon Lacy

GENRE: Romance, Comedy
LOGLINE:

When a love-scorn attorney has a not-so-pleasant encounter with a hopeless romantic musician, she must face her fears about love and loss to find her happily ever after; while her more-than-ready to be married little sister gets accidentally engaged to her commitment-phobic boyfriend. Both must navigate the highs and lows of relationships and their own commitment issues as they try to find the love they desire and truly deserve.

SYNOPSIS:

In downtown Los Angeles, ELLIS, JAMIE, ANGIE, MARK, and TONI frequent a local rooftop lounge where they enjoy good drinks, lively karaoke, and jovial conversation. As Toni and Ellis engage in their usual combative banter, it turns into a full-blown argument where Ellis concludes that Toni needs a man to take the edge off. Mark even offers to set her up with his roommate, Trent, a hopeless romantic musician, but she emphatically declines.

The next morning, Toni’s getting coffee and negotiating a million-dollar deal. In a hurry, she bolts out of Starbucks and literally collides with Trent, spilling coffee all over them both. Trent attempts to apologize, but Toni does not let him get a word in. He’s ruined her $1500 Chanel suit and she’s seeing red. Trent returns home to tell Mark about his horrible run-in with a “she-devil”. To cheer him up, Mark invites him out to join him and a group of friends for dinner. He agrees. Oh, what a night it is!

“YOU!” Trent and Toni instantly recognize one another and begin rehashing the gritty details from their previous encounter. Later that evening, after she calms down, Toni apologizes to Trent. Sparks fly between the two. At the end of the night, Trent asks to see Toni again. She rejects him, but for a moment, Toni softens. She gives Trent a quick peck on the cheek. Trent is smitten.

Inspired by Trent and Toni’s connection, Jamie begins talking about getting married to Ellis. That is the last thing he wants to do, but he’s afraid to tell her the truth. Instead, his silence leads her to believe that he’s ready to take the plunge. After a long shift at the hospital, Jamie comes home. Ellis offers to massage her exhaustion away. The massage turns quickly to lovemaking. At the peak of their passion, Ellis says to Jamie, "marry me, girl." Jamie takes it and runs with it. They’re engaged! Jamie is over the moon. Ellis is horrified! It was a mistake. He didn’t mean it. It was just “dirty talk”.

Enamored with Toni, Trent resolves that he is going to pursue her. Knowing that it will be a challenge, Trent is willing to do whatever it takes to win her affection. Their first date is magical and ends with a sultry serenade as they dance slowly under the stars on the Santa Monica Pier. After a short yet beautiful courtship, Trent helps Toni to face and finally release the pain of her breakup with Bryant and reconnects her with her passion, painting. In return, she gives him her heart.

As the wedding date swiftly approaches, Ellis becomes frantic. In an intense argument with Jamie, Ellis blurts out that it was all a mistake. Heartbroken, Jamie calls off the wedding. As she tries to help them to make sense of this mess, Toni discovers that Trent and Mark knew all along that Ellis had doubts. Hurt and betrayed, she hastily ends her blossoming relationship with Trent.

Ellis does some soul searching and returns to his roots – his mother – where all his commitment issues began. He works through his pain and realizes that Jamie is “the one”. She has been all along. Toni, Jamie, and Angie steal away for a weekend in Malibu to escape the drama and immerse themselves in some much-needed fun in the sun. To their surprise, Ellis interrupts their shenanigans to beg Jamie for forgiveness and her hand in marriage. She tearfully accepts.

Meanwhile, Toni and Trent could not be further apart. While attending a charity event, Toni comes face to face with the man who broke her heart, BRYANT. They share a kiss sending her spiraling out of emotional control and pushing Trent beyond his breaking point. A symbol of their love is needed to remind them that “Love is not linear or clean. But if it's real it somehow all comes t.ogether.” In hopes of winning her back, Trent performs the ultimate grand gesture and serenades Toni at Jamie and Ellis’ reception with the song he sang to her on their first date. Toni vows to never leave his side, again.
