George and his gang of serial jewel thieves, HENRY (44), LOUIS (41), ARTHUR (47), JAMES (47), and EDWARD (36) set up a meeting. The meeting gets intense and the group tries to convince George to do one last job. George feels he has had enough and doesn’t need any more money but most of the crew have blown all their money through various vices and are desperate. They convince him that everything has been taken care of, he agrees on the job. The six of them in various disguises, pull up to a store and enter. Everything goes perfect until Henry shoots a security guard. They also steal some hidden diamonds that are being laundered from the Russian Mob. Minutes later they switch vehicles, burn the first one, and drive away to meet their fence, JOHN. Along the way a heavy snowstorm sets in and they are forced to stop at a inconspicuous country inn in Western Massachusetts. The owners, CRAIG (42) and AMY (40) HART, has closed the inn but when George unsuccessfully tries to convince the Harts to allow them to stay, the others take charge. The group, with guns drawn, force their way in and tie up the Harts and their two children. Daughter ANNIE (9) has returned from a visit to a psychologist earlier in the day where she was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Annie has an invisible friend; CHARLOTTE (9), who she is convinced will protect her and her family from the gang. In the beginning everyone laughs the little girl off but then James goes upstairs and mysteriously drowns in a hot tub full of scalding water. Edward sees the body and his eyes begin to see strange occurrences goes berserk and tries to escape in the van. A strange force pulls the van into the frozen ice, which breaks and sends Edward into the icy depths below. Things get worse when images and paintings start to move and change throughout the inn. Annie informs the rest that they will not survive the night and credits James and Edward’s death to Charlotte. Again, they refuse to believe until Henry is found with his head nearly decapitated in the basement wine cellar. Then lights from upstairs begin to flicker off and on even though the chords have been ripped out of the walls. George starts to have second thoughts and makes plans to leave earlier than expected. Louis has a psychotic breakdown and violently takes over the inn. He drags Amy upstairs and as he is about to rape her, he is stabbed by Charlotte. A bug eyed Amy finishes the job by chopping off Louis head with a 17th century sword. All hell breaks loose. Seeing the flashes lights, police begin to move to the inn. Arthur, with help from Charlotte shoots himself. A wild eyed George flees from Charlotte who follows him through the pictures in the inn. Charlotte pops out of a portrait and a petrified George smashes through the third story window. George wakes up two and a half days later. Agents Conroy and Gillis do not believe his story, especially the Harts claim nothing happened. George begins to see Charlotte move through the hospital pictures. The detectives shake their head in disbelief as George, now delirious, screams as Charlotte steps out of the picture. Terrified beyond anything he has ever seen, George grabs Gillis’ gun and empties the clip at Charlotte, who sheepishly smiles at him. The detectives subdue a catatonic George and stare over at a wall where bullets have made a silhouette of a little girl. Six weeks later George is in a padded room and the Harts are having a picnic near the river behind the inn. They laugh and play as Annie pushes and empty swing back and forth.
