MODERN HORRORS: VOLUME ONE

MODERN HORRORS: VOLUME ONE
By David Francis McQuillen

GENRE: Science Fiction, Horror
LOGLINE:

Loving mothers fight for family, friends, and community in three terrifying near-future tales of principled women forced to do battle with warped, hyper-competitive, technologically empowered men.

SYNOPSIS:

Modern Horrors: Volume 1 is a limited science-fiction/body-horror anthology series that combines the grounded tech anxiety of Black Mirror, the blunt politicism of Heretic, and the soul-crushing hopelessness of Seven into an intense, terrifying evocation of left-leaning America’s Trump 2.0/Project 2025 dread.

Episodes 101-102: Pseudoscents

When Pontiac, Illinois matriarch Ethel Hood is killed by her own great dane, Deputy Annie Burroughs, the local sheriff department’s best investigator and a lesbian mother of one, is tasked with finding out why.

As more inexplicable attacks happen, Annie's investigation leads to the town’s largest employer, the Hood family's chemical manufacturing plant, that has recently taken on a government contract creating artificial scents for the training of police and military canines.

But could there be more disturbing plans for these engineered scents? And is it possible a disgruntled or politically motivated plant employee has been stealing product?

The unthinkable answer will endanger not just Annie, but her neighbors, her son Rory, and millions of Eastern Europeans as well.

Episodes 103-104: The Tower

When Santa Clarita mother, pro-bono lawyer and Moms-Demand-Action-warrior Jacque Denton gets the best of Congressman Royce Towsley at a local town hall, and the incident goes viral just weeks before the national election, she’s feeling pretty good about herself.

Then she starts hallucinating.

Is she losing her mind, or could her mental struggles be somehow related to a new, nearby cell phone tower that just went operational?

As Jacque’s grip on reality disintegrates and her family falls apart, she finds herself drawn into the controversial subculture of targeted individuals… and begins to ponder acts of violence she has spent her whole life fighting against.

Episodes 105-106: Dollars & Cents

The seven top executives of struggling company Frontier Medical have gathered with their families at CEO Lee Stenstrom’s palatial Jupiter Island mansion to iron out the final details on a massive employee layoff.

Then people in the mansion start losing limbs, and the execs receive a phone call. Two liberal engineering employees have hidden a unified-field-theory breakthrough from the company… and built applications.

Their mandate for the executives: find a way to cut costs without cutting jobs, or the violence will continue.

When the executives realize the only possible solution to the terrorists’ demands is to sacrifice their own collective net worth, they chose to fight back instead, setting in motion a devastating cascade of events.

All seems doomed, until the executives’ fed-up wives take surprise action in the final moments.
