31 TWENTYFOUR

31 TWENTYFOUR
By Rachel Ritchie

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

After accidentally overhearing that she’s moving within days, a risk-averse high schooler must take on her school’s annual senior year Halloween competition—amidst way too much fake blood—and face the teen angst bullshit and her crush that she’s avoided for years to win the Cauldron to be able to finish high school with her friends.

SYNOPSIS:

On All Hallow's Eve... Eve, Thea Nguyen stares at the musical audition sheet, and despite the chance to spend time with her crush, the school's golden boy, Shawn, she chooses to stay in her comfort zone, avoiding her stage fright. And while she weasels her way out of playing 31 Twentyfour, her best friends are both in as Amara finally wears Zach down.

Meanwhile, Will—who has been preparing for years to be the sixth member of his family to win—gets ready for the game and we learn just how much pressure his mom has put on him. Especially considering that she met her husband and fucked over her own best friend, Thea's mom, back in the day playing. Speaking of, Mamma May reminds Thea to watch her back around Will as she's about to head out the door, and Thea reminds her that she's going to support her friends—not play. But when she overhears that they're moving to Dubai within days, she panics. Her life and plans flash before her eyes, and it hits her: if she wants to keep her friends and their shared college plans, there is only one way to afford it. Win.

Fueled by adrenaline, Thea—and her fellow seniors—learn their chill math teacher is the Mastermind behind this year's 50th-anniversary game. And his first twist? Only ten teams of three will play. As her friends quickly earn their spots, Thea struggles to get her hands on one, forcing her to face one of her worst fears: heights. Thea gulps, staring down a two-story giant spider's web with the principal's seemingly-goody-two-shoes son, Brian, to snag an AirTag, aka her ticket in. Luckily, despite their shared fear, her desperation gives her the advantage as he avoids the crawl and she clutches the last spot.

Back at HQ, Thea learns she's stuck with the two people she wanted the least: Will and Shawn. Fun. But there's another twist: a fitting 31st player in the game—Brian—and he gets to pick his team. And to Thea's joy—and dismay—he doesn't pick hers. Instead, he chooses this moment to expose and fuck over his supposed "best friend," Jack, fittingly calling him a Jackass and sending him into the game solo while Brian joins the new kid, Jude, and Sam, the former basketball team captain who recently fell from grace. And with the teams locked, it's time to let the games begin.

Unfortunately, things are off to a rocky start, especially since Thea's clear preference for Shawn and lack of trust in Will has her shooting down every idea of his. But when Will confronts her during the Senior Prank turn Purge: Teachers Revenge, Thea learns Will might actually be in the dark about his mom's betrayal. So she finally gives him a chance to learn who he is, separate from his family. And while the pair become friends, her crush on Shawn fades as the day kicks into high gear.

The final challenges push the teams to their limits as the Mastermind has a little too much fun and it becomes harder to figure out who’s still in the game by the hour as players are now up for individual versus team eliminations. But just as Thea gets a grasp on her new reality and 31 Twentyfour, Zach and Amara discover that she’s moving and told seemingly everyone but them before Thea learns she's had doubts about the wrong guy all along. And with only Brian, Sam, and Jude standing in the way of victory, Thea’s gotta get her shit together to save her friendships, take the right guy down, and make sure history doesn't repeat itself once she crosses the finish line.
