Matilda: Although there are several schools of thought, Matilda as originally used is of Teutonic origins and means Mighty Battle Maiden, referring to the women in camps during the Thirty-Year Wars in Europe. Later this more commonly referred to the great army coats or blankets that soldiers rolled into a swag and tossed over their shoulders while marching.

Overview:
Survivors is a multimedia, documentary-style project that has the potential to inspire, move and resonate with any audience it encounters. It is a story of hardship, love, loss and family. The project is rooted in the story of 2 World War II veterans who, through fate and incredibly challenging lives found and loved each other. As a young corporal in the British army, Beryl Catherine Browns comrades stationed with her at their British base did not think much of the Canadian soldier she found and helped on a rainy day in Egypt. (When does it rain in Egypt? God IS REAL!) Anyway, Ken Gee’s motorcycle ran out of gas and that is how they came to meet stationed in the same place during World War 2. They didn’t meet again until some years after the war, where she traveled from England to start a new life in a New Country; there she saw him across the room after the crowd broke open at the local legion she attended one night shortly after her arrival here in Canada. Their life from then on was not easy, but was taken in steps and met with triumph, acceptance, patience and resilience. Their story lives on through their family, specifically through the granddaughter who is the writer and creator of the proposed project.
Storytelling is one of the most fundamental elements of human history and allows for an emotional depth that takes the readers and or viewers on a trip some place special and some place deep without ever leaving their seat! The main film project will be accompanied by a written version of the story, poem and photographs. Survivors: showcases not only a remarkable love story, but the effects that WAR caused trauma has on a family intergenerationally. This is why it is an important story to be told, there are so many individuals and families who can relate to the material and history woven throughout its core over the time-period in which this story is told that it’s important for others to get the chance and opportunity to find their own place and understanding in history and what they too have been through from those times in just the simple opportunity of watching this documentary where they can ultimately find closure of their own in coming to know, understand and learn that they too are not alone in what they’ve lived through!
